Oscar short-lists eight short docs

Three to five of the films may earn Oscar nods.

Eight short nonfiction films have been selected from a pool of 31 eligible contenders by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences for consideration for the 81st Academy Awards.

Three to five of the shorts are eligible to earn Oscar nominations.
The eight films, in alphabetical order:

"The Conscience of Nhem En"
"David McCullough: Painting With Words"
"The Final Inch"
"Smile Pinki"
"Tongzhi in Love"
"Viva La Causa"
"The Witness: From the Balcony of Room 306"

Nominations for the 81st Academy Awards will be announced Thursday, Jan. 22, 2009, at 5:30 a.m. PST in the academy's Samuel Goldwyn Theater. Oscars will be presented on ABC on Sunday, Feb. 22.
